Commemorating 75 years of Indian Independence

Join us for a year long celebration of the Indian Freedom Struggle and its deep connections to Black America

"In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of reality." - MLK Jr

"It may be through the negroes that the unadulterated message of nonviolence will be delivered to the world."

- MK Gandhi

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence from British colonial rule. The revolutionary ideas and practices that developed in the struggle not only united the masses of India, but deeply resonated with anticolonial liberation movements in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and found a political home in the Black freedom movement in America.

We in Philadelphia and Bengaluru are engaged in a year-long celebration with reading groups and conferences studying the Indian struggle, the Black radical tradition and their historical ties, with a view to discover the relevance of these ideas in today's world.

One of the greatest tributes to our freedom struggle was made by African Americans in their own struggle for freedom. At this event, we will discuss the deep relationship between India and Afro America, represented by figures like W.E.B Du Bois, Howard Thurman, and Martin Luther King Jr. The event will seek to educate people on the spiritual relationship between India and Afro-America.
